long haul.

Manufactured by Clyde Engineering under contract from EMD at Granville, NSW, between 1970 and 1972, the Commonwealth Railways CL Class became the last example of the famous EMD bulldog design built anywhere in the world.

The class worked the Trans-Australian Railway and later ran through from New South Wales to Western Australia. Its mechanical layout closely followed the earlier Western Australian L Class.

1970–72Built for Commonwealth Railways at Clyde Engineering’s Granville workshops.
1975Transferred to Australian National Railways and progressively adopted green and yellow.
1980sExpanded into Adelaide and Alice Springs after standard-gauge connections opened.
LaterRebuilt by Morrison Knudsen into the CLF freight and CLP passenger classes.
