Between 1971 and 1978, 310 covered vans were constructed for Commonwealth Railways and Australian National Railways by manufacturers including Carmor Engineering, Commonwealth Engineering and Mechanical Handling. All were delivered as VFX vans in an all-over maroon scheme.
Operating on broad and standard gauge, they carried general freight and bulky, low-density loads such as paper products across Australia. Under the new ROA coding system in the early 1980s they became ABFX, with many later receiving Australian National’s green and yellow livery. Historical information sourced from Auscision.
