Carmor Engineering built the 50 covered box vans in 1976 as VFX 2788–2837. The vehicles later carried the ABFX classification as the Australian freight coding system evolved.

Their enclosed bodies protected general freight in transit and made the class part of the broad family of vans that supported long-distance rail operations.
